Iaan J. Wilson
Iaan Wilson was a professional trumpet player for thirty-five years, having been appointed Principal Trumpet of the Ulster Orchestra at the age of nineteen. There followed positions with the English National Opera, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and then The Royal Opera House Orchestra at Covent Garden London, playing under conductors such as Kempe, Boulez, Boult, Tippett, Britten, Bernstein, Haitink, Kleiber and Stravinsky.
He was invited to become Professor of Trumpet, Natural Trumpet and Cornetto at Trinity College of Music in 1980 and then The Royal Academy of Music.
Iaan Wilson has recorded with every major orchestra in London and toured to Australia, Japan, China, Europe and the United States. Also many early music recordings including the world première of the Vivaldi Double Trumpet concerto on natural trumpets, plus concerts and recordings with the world famous Philip Jones Brass ensemble.
Recently Iaan lived in New Zealand for five years and during this time he taught and examined for The New Zealand School of Music.He has adjudicated for Chamber Music NZ and the Gisborne International Solo Competition. Iaan also held positions at The University of Canterbury where he formed their first brass ensemble and started the brass early music department. As directer of Addington Brass, for 3 years he led them to a B grade Championship victory in the 2006 NZ National Band Contest.
Living now in Brisbane Australia , Iaan Wilson teaches at the Senior and Junior Conservatorium of Music, and recently was appointed Musical Director of the A grade Brisbane Brass.
